Superhuman: The Best Email App

If you get more than 10 emails per week and you enjoy beautiful software, you'll want to seriously consider Superhuman. Superhuman claims to be the fastest email experience, and we tend to agree. I'm not kidding, I'm talking like those 3-5 seconds you often need to wait for Gmail to load—yeah, Superhuman is literally instant. Want to write an email? Open Superhuman and press [c] and you'll be in a compose window a solid 2 seconds before Gmail loads.

Sign up here for a free month of Superhuman.

You might be thinking "why pay for email management when you can use any email client for free?" 🤔

While I've spoken to many about the sheer simplicity and power, I find that either someone "gets it" or "doesn't", and if you don't, it's not for you.

Prior to Superhuman we were using Gmail. And Gmail is great as a free email experience, but once we tried Superhuman we found it made the entire "checking and answering emails" experience way more enjoyable—and fast.

If you highly value your time, and are willing to pay a bit extra for enjoyment, Superhuman is the tool that will do just that, while get you through your email inbox 2x as fast.

In summary, if you’re on email A LOT and want to optimize for enjoyment/ease/speed, Superhuman is 100% worth it. We’ve been paying for it for years and can't see life without it It's thoughtful, fast, and powerful. The way email should have been.

Sign up here for a free month of Superhuman.

Superhuman's email app + mobile app has a beautiful interface and offers the fastest email experience.

Who Should Use Superhuman?

Superhuman is for those who want a better email experience.

  • Busy Professionals. If you check your email multiple times a day and want a smarter inbox that can help you quickly identify what is important, Superhuman will be a huge help.
  • Easily Distracted folks. If you often gointo Gmail or Outlook and wonder, "what was I about to do?" then Superhuman can help keep you focused. This is because Superhuman is fast (you don't need to wait for anything to load), and it also has a minimal design. No bright colors, flashing buttons, or chat icons to get you distracted. It's built for focus.
  • Want Better Email. If email is one of your most used tools and you want to enhane your experience onthe day-to-day, Superhuman is definitely worth trying.

What Does Superhuman Email Do?

Here are some key features that we love.

Superhuman Reminders

Set reminders to be returned on your emails if someone hasn't responded, mark messages as done with hitting a button and label messages with ease. Since we started using Superhuman, we see inbox zero way more often.

Read Statuses

Read statuses are super helpful for our team too (if I send an email and Andra (my Co founder) is cc'd, she can also see if the recipient opened the email or if I am in the middle of typing a reply. This has been so helpful for collaboration 🤜 🤛).

Split Inbox

Set filters so that you can have different inbox splits (for example, filters for emails that are Important, Newsletters, Calendar Alerts, and Notifications). This creates a unified inbox that is more orderly.

Social Profiles

Want to access more info quickly on the person that just emailed you? Superhuman's right hand bar will pull in the social media profiles of the person your writing to for easy access.

Shared Snippets

Use their advanced features like saved snippets for a re-usable bit of text that you use often and you'll save a ton of time. You can even share these snippets with team members to better collaborate.

AI Drafts

Their *new* AI features are impressive and a fantastic use of AI. Write your emails quickly as a blurb, then ask AI to re-write with commands like "shorten", "lengthen", "simplify" or "improve writing". Even cooler? Superhuman learns your voice from your previous emails and you can ask Superhuman to re-write something in your voice 🤯

Superhuman's new AI features are impressive.

Superhuman also figures out if an email you sent needs a follow-up/nudge, and it automatically drafts a follow-up in your voice and leaves it in your inbox for you to hit send (yes, just like an executive assistant would).

If you have someone currently managing your inbox, definitely consider giving Superhuman a shot. Even if an Executive Assistant is still there to manage the more complex emails, Superhuman will more than save them several hours a month with auto-drafts and AI prompts, more than paying for itself.

Sign up here for a free trial of Superhuman.

AI Search

This is one of the most impressive features of Superhuman, one that saves us an incredible amount of headache (and time).

AI search allows you to ask any question about your inbox in natural language, and Superhuman will return with an answer based on your inbox and provide the emails that it is referencing.

I can't tell you how much time I used to spend searching my inbox with "exact keywords". This is now totally eliminated with the AI search feature.

AI Workflows

You can set up rules for how you'd like emails to be handled helping certain types of emails totally skip your inbox 🤯 For example, use AI to auto-respond to job applications thanking them for applying, then auto-forward their email to your hiring manager, AND mark the email as done in your inbox.

Superhuman For Teams

Superhuman allows you to fully collaborate with team members regardless of whether or not they are even using Superhuman.

With their new team collaboration and shared comments functionality, you can easily share existing email threads and move your private Slack chats into Superhuman email threads (right where they belong).

This has come super handy for us when we've had sales negotiations (very helpful to @mention each other and check-in if what is proposed makes sense), or to more thoughtfully respond to a customer.

You can also share drafts with your team members and collaborate in the comments to refine your message.

Superhuman Keyboard Shortcuts

Superhuman also allows you to triage through your inbox using only keyboard shortcuts.

I was a skeptic for years, until I finally gave it a shot. Learned some of the simple keyboard shortcuts like [e] for archive and [h] for snooze + some additional fun shortcuts like [#] for delete, and [!] for spam.

Don't like memorizing keyboard shortcuts to get through your email more quickly? Great, then just press [CMD] + [k] for the command bar → the Superhuman key, which allows you to do absolutely anything from anywhere just by typing.

Sign up here for a free trial of Superhuman.

Mobile App

Rating: A-

Oh, and the mobile Superhuman app. You can mark messages as done in literally one second on the go via the Superhuman mobile app. Triaging your inbox on the go has literally never been easier. You can also go ahead and "snooze an email for when you're on your computer", because sometimes you just want your full keyboard.

One thing to note is, this rating is for the Superhuman iOS mobile app (Android was released more recently and is still a few features behind, e.g. read statuses, the calendar and customizable swipe actions are still to come along with a few others).

How Much Does Superhuman Cost?

  • Monthly Subscription: $30/mo

There is no discount on annual pricing for Superhuman, although if you sign up using this link you will get your first-month free.

Final Verdict: Is Superhuman worth it?

Superhuman email works with Google Workspace (G Suite) or your Outlook account. As a part of Superhuman's onboarding process, you'll get a 30 minute call with one of their reps to show you how to get the most out the tool. You can then add multiple email accounts (e.g. personal + work) and it's super easy to flip between email accounts making it even more worthwhile as now you never have to use Gmail or Outlook again.

At the end of the day, I'll never leave Superhuman, because it makes me dread email less. Enjoy it even. I first resisted the idea of paying for email but after a month of using it, I couldn't see myself not using Superhuman again.

Our advice? Try it and you'll be unable to see yourself using Gmail ever again too.

Does Superhuman Work With Teams?

Yes, Superhuman works with teams with the recent launch of their new features around team collaboration and shared comments functionality. You can now easily share existing email threads with other team members (even if they aren't using Superhuman), and privately share comments to make email more collaborative.

Can I Use Superhuman As A Help Desk?

While we don't recommend it, it depends on your team's size.

  • Individuals: If you're a team of 1 or 2 people, you might be able to get away with spinning up a standalone user account with Google Workspace for [email protected] or [email protected], that way you can add it as an additional user in your Superhuman account which will keep personal messages separate from team messages and later allow for scaling to a proper help desk in the future.
  • Small Teams: Depending on the size of your team, especially if you don't already have a standalone [email protected], you might be able to get away with using Superhuman as your shared help desk. That said, this is when you might want to spin up a Google Group (or user account) for the standalone inbox, and use a proper help desk like Help Scout (we use them + Superhuman actually uses them after having outgrown Superhuman for their own internal support needs). You might be able to get away with Superhuman, but we recommend using a Google Group for support, and Superhuman doesn't even connect with Google Groups, only standalone user accounts.
  • Mid-Large Teams: You're definitely going to want to use one of the best help desks in-place of Superhuman at this point. Having proper workflows for directing support tickets to specific team members, robust tagging and filtering, and API access is going to be critical at this size.

We cover this in more detail and visualize it toward the end of our Superhuman Review video.

Is Superhuman Worth It?

We actually wrote an entire article and video titled: "Is Superhuman worth it? 5 Signs You Should Leave Gmail/Outlook in 2024" as this is not a simple "yes or no".

How much does the Superhuman annual plan cost?

Superhuman's annual plan costs the same with or without the extended 30–day free trial, coming in at $25/user/mo, paid annual, coming in at $300/user/year. If that sounds like a lot, we highly recommend you read our full Superhuman Email Review to see why it's worth the price.

What is the total cost for the Nonprofit or Education plan?

People have reported that Superhuman does have nonprofit and education pricing as low as $10–15/user/mo, that said, you'd have to reach out to their support team to ask for more details ([email protected]).

Can you get a refund on your annual plan?

Superhuman will not refund you if you want to cancel your annual plan, so be sure to purchase the monthly tier if you're unsure of if you want to use Superhuman for the long-haul or are just testing it out.

If you use our Superhuman discount link and select the annual tier, it will give you $30 off the annual tier, bringing it from $300 down to $270 (for a single seat). If you're unsure about using Superhuman, you should simply select the monthly tier and use the discount code here.

You can easily switch from a monthly plan to an annual plan and claim the discount after you have an account in the billing area, so no need to worry about selecting the annual tier out of the gate if you're unsure.
