At the 2024 Make With Notion summit, Notion unveiled their latest offering: Notion Mail. According to their website, it's "the only inbox that makes life simpler." Sounds promising, right? Well here's the catch—Notion didn't actually build Notion Mail. Instead, they purchased a privacy focused email app called Skiff, slapped the Notion logo on it, cut out those pesky privacy features, and tacked on a few database integrations (which we're not sure are all too useful).
So, is it any good? We haven't tried it yet, but from the demos we've seen, we're not impressed. If you're looking for a better email experience, we don't recommend jumping into Notion Mail—especially on a paid tier. There are far better alternatives out there if you're okay with paying for email— for example, Superhuman (our go-to for over 6+ years).
We believe there are better options available in this category, read below to learn what they do well, and what they could do better. ⤵
Personalized to your work and beautifully designed—Notion Mail is the only inbox that makes life simpler.
Notion Mail is Notion's latest attempt to expand their suite of tools by adding email to the mix. For hardcore Notion users, this might sound cool—but let's peel back the curtain.
Here's the truth: Notion didn't build Notion Mail (just like they didn't build Notion Calendar). Instead, they acquired Skiff, an email client celebrated for its strong privacy features.
Skiff's users valued its commitment to security, with encrypted emails, calendar events, and documents at the core of its offerings.
But after Notion's acquisition, those privacy features were scrapped. Notion killed off the end-to-end encryption services and opted to integrate with Google Workspace and Gmail—the furthest thing from privacy-focused. (This decision impacted about 2 million Skiff users, by the way.)
For the privacy conscious-users who chose Skiff for its encryption, this shift means giving Google access to their emails—a move that directly opposes their original intent. So most will need to migrate off and find something else.
So what really is Notion Mail? It's Skiff, stripped of its privacy features, rebranded with the Notion logo, and paired with an database-to-inbox (?!) integration that feels... unnecessary.
While we haven't tried Notion Mail yet, the demo videos we've seen leave even the most dedicated Notion users scratching their heads. (Seriously, again, why are they cluttering your inbox with Notion database items??)
We'll update this review once we get a chance to try it ourselves, but for now, Notion Mail feels like a shortcut—a quick acquisition, stripped of its core components, re-skinned, and marketed as an innovation of their own. It's not something we think is worth getting excited about.
If you're a hardcore Notion user who already uses Gmail, perhaps upgrading to Notion Mail is worth it as it should in theory be better than Gmail.
But if you're someone who is just looking for the best email app, skip Notion Mail. And f you're using Outlook...well, it's not supported (at least yet).
We'll update this review once we've had a chance to try out Notion Mail ourselves, but based on their marketing materials, here's what they plan to offer:
You'll be able to organize your inbox with customizable views, similar to Notion. In theory, this should allow for improved email organization.
Notion Mail says they will have an "autopilot" feature powered by AI. It promises to:
So far, the best implementation of AI in email we've seen is Superhuman's AI assistant. Their assistant lets you ask plain-text questions about your inbox, and it will search your inbox and answer your question. It also drafts AI replies for you based on your tone from previous emails, and streamlines email management. With that being said, we're curious if Notion Mail's execution of their AI features can add any value beyond what exists out there.
Notion Mail says they will integrate with Notion Calendar, theoretically making event scheduling easier.
Pricing details for Notion Mail have not been officially announced yet. However, it's likely they'll stick to their freemium model, with advanced features included in paid plans.
Is Notion Mail Worth it? They're saying it will be released in early 2025, so we'll have to wait and see!
