While both Notion Mail and Superhuman Mail provide a better user experience than Gmail, Superhuman Mail goes above and beyond with its features for busy professionals looking to get through their inbox faster, while Notion's price point may be better suited for students or those just looking for a better user interface.
I've been using Superhuman Mail for 6+ years, so when Notion Mail came out, I was curious to give it a shot. I connected my inbox and tried to use it as my daily email app, but within a day I realized it was nowhere near as thought out as Superhuman Mail.
With Superhuman Mail, I can triage my entire inbox incredibly quickly: snooze emails, schedule replies, mute threads, archive messages, and jump between Split Inboxes without touching my mouse. With Notion Mail, I kept breaking flow because I had to pause, reach for my mouse, as the features weren't all built to be keyboard first. It looked nice, but it slowed me down. The AI features were no where near Superhuman Mail's and at that point, I knew it couldn't be my main email client.
Notion and Superhuman both offer the ability to split similar types of emails into different "views" (as Notion calls them) or Split Inboxes (as Superhuman Mail calls them).
Essentially, with both tools, you can either use AI to auto-categorize emails or manually set up a filter yourself that helps segment your inbox. This helps you triage through "like" emails at the same time, aiding with context switching and saving time.
Superhuman Mail takes this one step further with its workflows feature. You can set up rules for how you'd like emails to be handled (e.g., use AI to auto-respond to a job application, auto-forward to your hiring manager, and mark as done in your inbox, all without you touching it).
They hardly compare in terms of their AI email assistant features. Notion Mail's AI is similar to what you'd get in Gmail, while Superhuman Mail actually drafts email responses in your tone. YES, in your voice. It learns from your previous messages and responds as you would. AND it drafts emails for you automatically. An email lands in your inbox, and Superhuman Mail writes the reply. All you need to do is review it and send.
Second, Superhuman Mail even figures out if an email you sent needs a follow-up/nudge, and it automatically drafts a follow-up in your voice and leaves it in your inbox for you to hit send (just like an executive assistant would 🤯).
Third, Superhuman Mail uses AI to search your inbox. Forget trying to find the perfect search term to surface an email. With Superhuman Mail, you can ask any question in plain language, and it will give you an AI summary response (e.g., "Where was the conversation left off with XYZ? When is the last time I spoke to XYZ?").
The one advantage Notion Mail has is its integration with Notion Pages. You can use Notion AI to reference a Notion Page, and it will draft a response based on the context of the page. That said, you'd have to be a very heavy Notion user for this to offer an advantage.
Superhuman Mail is hands down the better email app. It also has a ton of other features which you can read about in our full Superhuman Mail Review (like the ability to share and collaborate on emails with your team). Notion Mail may only provide advantages if you're a super hardcore Notion user or just want a better Gmail interface.
If you're on the fence, would highly recommend at least trying Superhuman Mail for free for 30 days (Superhuman Mail discount) so you can truly experience the power of the tool (although, we'll warn you that you might never want to go back to using anything else for email!).
