Comparison Summary

Help Scout is our favorite help desk software (it's what we use) for small-medium sized teams. While it has a live-chat feature, it is a secondary feature, while for Intercom live-chat is at the core of what they do.

If you are a small team, we don't recommend having live-chat as you'll find yourself glued to your computer 😄

Typically a lot of startups and SaaS companies use Intercom.

Editor's Verdict

Editor's Verdict

Help Scout sets clear expectations with its "email first, maybe live" chat approach, so customers aren't left waiting for instant replies that won't come. This means small teams never feel pressured to be glued to their screens, and customers get a more honest, human experience. You only show as available if someone is actually there, and if the team steps away, the system automatically marks them as away, avoiding the classic "fake live chat" trap.

Intercom, on the other hand, is all about live chat and expects instant responses. This quickly leads to anxiety and burnout for small teams who can't be online all the time. Unless you have a dedicated group ready to handle chat constantly, Intercom just sets you up for frustration, both for your staff and your customers.

If you're a small business or startup, Help Scout nails expectation management and keeps both your team and your customers happy. Intercom only makes sense if you're running a large help desk with several full-time agents sitting on chat. For everyone else, Help Scout is the clear pick.
