Motion vs Linear

Linear's interface is very minimal, clean, and it has streamlined workflows that you can intuitively pick up. Because Linear was built specifically for engineering workflows and it uses best practices out of the box, this makes it easier to set up, especially if you managing engineering tasks.

If you are not managing engineering tasks, then it will feel more like you have to do workarounds, and the terminology they use will not make as much sense as other project management tools. That's why we don't recommend it for anything outside of engineering.

Linear adoption for engineering teams is incredibly easy. We were able to fully onboard our team within literally 5 minutes. Since Linear integrates in with coding tools and Slack so well, and built specifically for engineers, our team intuitively picked it up with zero training or hand holding. More than that, we got messages by the end of the day saying how much they loved it (super rare when it comes to implementing new software!).

This is because Linear was built for engineering teams and is highly opinionated, it makes adoption easier, as there's not much you can really modify or mess with.

It also has a deep MCP integration with Claude Code and Codex, so it's actually fully accessible if you just want to use it via terminal or CLI, so engineers who would rather not leave terminal, can still keep a pulse on their Linear issues and keep them updated.

That said, Linear is very clearly built for engineering, product, and design teams, and stops there. Marketing and sales teams will feel totally limited by Linear, which usually means introducing another project management tool like Motion, Monday, or Asana. That’s where fragmentation starts, and adoption across the company drops even further.
