Shift just feels like a wrapper on top of Chrome, while Opera is basically the same old browser with some new onboarding and animations.

Only use Shift if you really need an account switcher wrapper; otherwise, Opera is the more complete browser between the two.

Editor's Verdict

Editor's Verdict

Opera does a better job with multi-account and workspace management if you want to organize tabs and create distinct workspaces, thanks to its Workspaces feature and slick switching animation. However, the workspaces in Opera all share the same cookies and cache, so you can't fully separate personal and work accounts. That means if you need real separation between environments, Opera falls short.

Shift, on the other hand, is built around easy account switching and pinning favorite apps to the sidebar, but it still feels like a thin wrapper on top of Chrome rather than a true productivity browser. It doesn't bring anything you can't already get from Chrome with tools like Workona or Toby, and it hasn't kept up with modern productivity browser features.

If you care most about organizing tabs and having workspaces, Opera's approach is more polished and flexible, even if it doesn't fully isolate environments. If you only need quick account switching with pinned apps, Shift does that, but it's underwhelming compared to what's now standard elsewhere. For most people, Opera is the better pick for workspace and tab management, but don't expect true separation or privacy.
