Comparison Summary

Google Chrome gives you a stable, familiar experience, especially if you rely on Google and use Windows or Linux, but if you want smarter tab management or anything new, Toby tries to help with a prettier tab page but only scratches the surface.

Only use Toby if you want a lightweight fix for tab overload; stick with Chrome for stability or if you need anything beyond basic tab tweaks.

Editor's Verdict

Editor's Verdict

If you care about tab management, Toby gives you a prettier new tab page and helps a little with tab overload, but it just skims the surface. It's lightweight and fine if you want minimal help, but it doesn't actually solve deeper tab chaos.

Chrome is no hero here either. Its tab management is basic, and even the much-hyped Tab Groups ended up as a manual opt-in feature rather than a real overhaul. Chrome's approach is familiar but limited, and if you're drowning in tabs, you'll probably hit the same old walls. The review even suggests Chrome is intentionally stagnant in this area to keep you searching (and seeing ads).

Bottom line: Neither is great for serious tab management, but Toby only offers a shallow improvement, while Chrome stays stuck with its basic, slightly clunky system. If you want something lightweight and simple, Toby might feel a bit tidier, but for anything beyond that, neither gets the job done. For real tab management, you'll need to look elsewhere.
