While Motion and Routine both fall into the daily planner category, they are quite different. Routine takes a manual approach to daily planning tasks on to your calendar while Motion uses AI to auto-schedule tasks and even full projects onto your calendar.

We recommend Motion for busy professionals and teams, and Routine more for those who want to dabble with the idea of daily planning since they have a basic free tier.

Editor's Verdict
Main

Motion and Routine cater to different needs, making the choice between them quite straightforward.

Routine serves well as a daily planner for personal use and habit building while Motion, with its emphasis on functionality, caters to users with numerous tasks and constantly evolving schedules.

Routine, with its beautiful and minimal design, is ideal for personal use and habit formation. It allows for time-blocking tasks on your calendar but makes adjusting your schedule for sudden changes quite manual and tedious.

For instance, if you need to insert a new task between two existing ones, it requires a manual reshuffle of your calendar, which can be a bit cumbersome.

That said, Routine is great for anyone aiming to establish consistent habits—be it hydration, fitness routines, family commitments, or even weekly grocery shopping, complete with the ability to make notes, such as jotting down your grocery list for example.

Routine also has a 'free forever' tier, which adds to its appeal for personal task management without any financial commitment.

Motion, in contrast, is better suited for professionals with dynamic workloads.

Its AI feature prioritizes and rearranges tasks based on urgency. It also includes a meeting scheduler and project management tool, making it more aligned with professional use.

When you add a task in Motion, you can assign it a priority level (low, medium, high), and the app intelligently rearranges your schedule to accommodate this new task. For example, if you add a high-priority task amongst existing ones, Motion will automatically adjust your schedule, ensuring that your most critical tasks are addressed first. This dynamic scheduling is a game-changer for professionals with evolving workloads.

AI Auto-Scheduling

AI Auto-Scheduling
Motion

Motion is in a completely different league for AI auto-scheduling. It automatically builds and updates your day, reschedules everything if plans shift, and keeps your tasks prioritized without you lifting a finger. You never have to drag, drop, or reshuffle anything yourself, if something changes, Motion just handles it.

Routine doesn't do any of this. You're stuck manually moving every task, and when your plans change, it's all on you to rearrange your schedule. There's no auto-prioritizing or smart adjustment, so you can't trust it to keep your day on track.

If you want your planner to actually build and maintain your schedule for you, Motion is the only real option here. Routine isn't even close.

Adaptive Rescheduling

Adaptive Rescheduling
Motion

Motion completely takes the headache out of changing plans by automatically shuffling your whole schedule whenever something comes up. Meetings, tasks, deep work blocks, everything gets adjusted in real time so you never have to drag things around or stress about missing deadlines. Even if you miss a task or your team's plans shift, Motion updates everything instantly and flags any issues, so nothing falls through the cracks.

Routine, on the other hand, doesn't do any of this. If something changes or you have an urgent new task, you're stuck manually rearranging your schedule. It won't shift things for you, so if your day isn't perfectly static, it just creates more work and frustration.

If adaptive rescheduling matters to you, Motion is on a completely different level. Routine doesn't even try to handle it. Pick Motion and stop worrying about your schedule falling apart when plans change.

Cognitive Clarity

Cognitive Clarity
Motion

Motion takes all the mental juggling out of your day by automatically prioritizing, scheduling, and updating your plans as things change, so you always know what matters most without any effort. You never have to manually rework your schedule or wonder if you're missing something, because Motion does it for you and keeps your priorities front and center.

Routine, on the other hand, actually makes things messier. It gives you more ways to organize, but they just end up adding confusion and extra work. You still have to manually adjust everything when your plans change, and it's easy to get lost or even delete important stuff by accident.

If you want less mental clutter and a planner that truly keeps your head clear, Motion is the obvious pick. Routine just adds to the chaos.

Planning Methodology

Planning Methodology
Motion

Motion makes planning almost effortless. You just start using it and everything falls into place, calendar, tasks, meetings, priorities, all handled in a way that feels natural. The AI keeps your schedule running smoothly, so you're not wasting time shuffling things around or getting lost in menus. Even if the interface can get a bit cluttered, you always know what's happening next and don't have to fight with the system.

Routine, on the other hand, turns even simple planning into a struggle. You're left guessing how to do basic things, and it's easy to make mistakes that mess up your setup. The organization tools actually add confusion, and you have to manually clean up your schedule every time something changes. It might look clean, but using it isn't.

If you want a daily planner that's truly easy to pick up and keeps planning simple, Motion is the clear choice. Routine just gets in your way.

Integrations

Integrations
Motion
Routine

Both Motion and Routine are pretty limited on integrations, but for different reasons. Motion gives you a couple of native options (email and Siri) and recently added a basic API and Zapier integration, so you can at least start to automate project management tasks and hack together some connections. But it still has big holes, like no way to sync with appointment schedulers or custom fields, and you're stuck with manual work for most cross-app workflows.

Routine, on the other hand, only connects directly with Google Workspace and Notion. There's no API and no way to hook into anything else yet, so if you need your planner to pull from more than those two, you're out of luck. None of the big names like Slack or Asana are actually available yet.

If you need even basic flexibility or want to start piecing together integrations beyond just Google and Notion, Motion has a slight edge since you can at least use Zapier or their API for some workflows, even though it's still clunky. Routine is more locked down and really only fits if you live inside Google and Notion. Neither is great for serious centralization, but Motion is a bit less frustrating if you have to pick.
