What is Proton Mail?

Proton Mail is a privacy-first email service built around end-to-end and zero-access encryption.

It keeps your inbox out of the advertising-data business and automatically encrypts messages between Proton users. It also sits inside a broader suite of tools that includes a calendar, VPN, password manager, and cloud storage.

Who is Proton Mail for?

Proton Mail is for people who care more about privacy and security than having the fastest, most deeply integrated email workflow.

Our Experience with Proton Mail

Privacy isn't the main thing we optimize for, we more so optimize for speed, good design, and team collaboration, so Superhuman Mail is our top pick for an email client.

But we wanted the perspective of someone who actually fits Proton's target audience, so we spoke with a friend who has been a paid Proton user for several years.

He originally signed up because he wanted to get ahead of the curve on privacy. In his words, "It's just an all around good company."

Here's how he described the experience:

"I really like Proton for its user-friendly all-in-one platform. It includes a password manager, VPN, cloud storage, and more, all with a high level of security. The company is based in Switzerland and has committed to no data log retention. Proton Mail automatically strips all the metadata from photos and files to protect your privacy. The user interface is pretty nice too, on all devices."

One clarification for accuracy: Proton documents strict no-logs policies for specific products, including Proton VPN. Proton Mail still processes some email metadata required for the service to function. Proton Mail can also remove EXIF metadata from image attachments, while Proton Drive generally encrypts file metadata rather than removing it.

Key Features

Private and Encrypted Email

Messages between Proton Mail users are automatically end-to-end encrypted, while messages stored in your inbox use zero-access encryption. In practical terms, Proton doesn't have the key required to read your stored messages.

You can also send password-protected emails to people outside Proton. The recipient doesn't need to switch email providers just to read the message.

Proton Pass Password Manager

Proton Pass stores and autofills passwords, passkeys, payment details, and secure notes across your devices. It also creates hide-my-email aliases, so you can sign up for an account without giving every random website your real email address.

The free version includes unlimited logins and devices. Paid plans add features like an integrated two-factor authenticator, unlimited aliases, dark web monitoring, and secure vault sharing.

Proton VPN

Proton VPN hides your IP address and encrypts the connection between your device and its VPN servers. It has a strict no-logs policy, independently audited apps, DNS leak protection, and a free tier without ads or bandwidth limits.

Proton Drive

Proton Drive is encrypted cloud storage for documents, photos, and other files. Files are encrypted on your device before they're uploaded, and shared links can be protected with passwords and expiration dates.

It covers much of the same basic job as Google Drive or Dropbox, but with privacy as the starting point instead of something buried in the settings.

AI and integrations

Proton Mail wouldn't be our first recommendation for someone who wants an automation-heavy inbox with lots of AI workflows and third-party integrations. Its advantage is private email, not being the most connected productivity hub.

Pricing

Proton Free: $0. Includes one encrypted email address, basic Proton Mail features, and free versions of Proton's other services.
Mail Plus: $4.99 per month, or $3.99 per month billed annually. Adds 15 GB of storage, additional addresses, one custom domain, unlimited folders and labels, and priority support.
Proton Unlimited: $12.99 per month, or $9.99 per month billed annually. Includes the premium versions of Proton Mail, Pass, VPN, Drive, and Calendar, with 500 GB of shared storage.

Final Verdict

Is Proton Mail worth it? Yes, if privacy and security are your number one focus for email.

If you care more about speed and AI features, we'd still choose Superhuman Mail. But if your priority is keeping your email and personal data private, Proton Mail is absolutely worth trying.
